Pets are often such an intrinsic part of our family that we easily forget they can be harbouring parasites, such as worms that can be harmful to us. However, the overall risk of disease in humans is relatively low but if it does happen the consequences can be serious, especially in children. The good news is that the risk can be minimised simply by controlling worm in our much loved pets.
There are two worms in the UK carried by pets which can potentially cause problems in humans: roundworms (Toxocara species) and a type of tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).
All animals are at risk of picking up worm infections, even indoor cats as worm eggs can be carried on your shoes.
It is important to be aware of the risk factors and develop an appropriate worming regime in consultation with your Vet, to limit infection in your pets and the risk to you or your family.
